Economics Meets Environment on May 5th

The Sierra Business Council will be presenting their new Investing for Prosperity program to Congress members and the public at our 2nd Quarter Membership Meeting to be held on Monday, May 5, 2003 at 5:30PM at the Auburn Elks Lodge.

A New Approach to Economic Development

Investing for Prosperity is the Sierra Business Council's forthcoming guide to rural economic development written in response to local decision makers asking how they can build their communities' overall wealth: their social, natural and financial capital.

In contrast to old school approaches that focus solely on financial gain, Investing for Prosperity takes an integrated approach to building long-term wealth, one designed to secure and invest in the competitive advantages of rural areas in the information age:

  • Capitalize on existing assets
  • Cultivate innovation and economic diversity
  • Create long-term social capital
  • Catalyze community partnerships

Investing for Prosperity:
Building Successful Communities in the Sierra Nevada

The Investing for Prosperity guide consists of four strategies and 14 tactics for building vibrant communities across the Sierra Nevada.

This new approach was developed with the guidance and input of an advisory committee of business and community leaders from throughout the Sierra. And these approaches are not just hypotheses; they are backed by 40 real life case studies of people and communities who have achieved genuine success.

21st Century Guide for Rural Communities

The Sierra Business Council calls Investing the first economic development guide of its kind that tailors 21st century strategies to rural communities.

Crab Feed Fundraiser A Hit

Our First Annual Crab Feed held on March 28th at the Placer Events Center in Rocklin was a great success.

Thank You Bob & Murriel Oles

100 members and guests enjoyed a 4-course dinner prepared by Placer County’s finest experienced crab wrangling team, our own Golden Circle Members Bob & Murriel Oles.

Peer Court Kids served the FEAST, set-up the tables, and cleaned up after the end of the Feed.

Thank You Sponsors

The event enjoyed the underwriting support of our mainstream locally elected County officials, including Supervisors Harriet White, Ted Gaines, Robert Weygandt and Placer County Treasurer Tax Collector Jenine Windeshausen.

There were NO speeches—much to the pleasure of everyone in attendance!

Assembly Minority Leader Dave Cox said “the food was great” and he was impressed with the Peer Court kids. Assemblyman Cox’s tablemates were Supervisor Ted Gaines and wife Beth who were accompanied by their youngest daughter Kellie (a real cutie).

Scrumptious

We started the Social at 5:30 pm, then the Feast began at 6:15 pm with a wonderful Bay Shrimp Cocktail and fresh-baked "freedom" rolls with lots of butter.

It was followed by Homemade Clam Chowder, and a Seafood Salad served with the scrumptious Crab. By 8:30 pm most of the crowd was finished and on their way home.

Save The Date

With the success of this first annual fundraiser, plans are already in motion for next year’s event—set for February 6, 2004. Save the date.

California Congress of Republicans Update

President Tom Jones attended the 13th Annual Convention of our statewide organization, the California Congress of Republicans. The event was held in San Diego from April 14-16.

One hundred forty delegates from all over California had many opportunities to participate in the sections, luncheons and banquet. I was impressed with the relationship that our Southern California Chapters have with their elected officials.

Speaker Highlights

State Senator Bill Morrow gave a great talk at the Saturday Breakfast. Congressman George Radanovich 19th congressional district filled in for Congressman Darrel Issa because President Bush sent Issa to the Middle East to meet with Arab Leaders.

War Effects Schedule

With the War causing the Congress to extend their session, it was difficult to keep the scheduled speakers and the Convention Committee had to make substitutions sometimes with less than 2 hours notice.

State Party Chairman Focuses on 2004

Our new California Republican Party Chairman Duf Sundheim and his Vice Chair Mario Rodriguez attended and spent lots of time with their theme to refocus the party to win in 2004. They were very open and spent all the time the convention delegates needed during the Q&A.

Most of the delegates feel that 2004 will be a great year for Republican Candidates. We certainly have nowhere to go but up.

New CCR President Elected

The key decision for convention delegates this year was to choose a new President of the California Congress of Republicans.

Pam Corradi, a long time CCR Vice President, ran against Lionel Bogut, best known as the recent editor of the CCR statewide newspaper that is mailed to members around the state.

In the end, it was a very close vote with Pam Corradi being elected President by 71 votes to Bogut’s 66 votes. Martin Bloxham was elected Vice President. All other officers were reelected.

The next CCR Convention will be this summer in Sacramento. All members are invited to attend.

Broken Promises: The State Budget Crisis

In July the Congress will host Placer County's city officials to discuss the state budget crisis and the broken promises to city and county governments. This is sure to be a fascinating look into the state budget crisis from the perspective of local government, which effecting fire, policy and education.

This event will be at the Placer County Events Center in Rocklin. Several Republican Mayors have committed. Time and date to be confirmed. For further updates, join our email list.
